Questions employers and brokers ask us.
Straight answers, no hype.
01What exactly is an experience mod (EMR)?
Your experience modification factor (EMR, mod, or X-Mod) compares your company’s actual claims experience with what is expected for businesses of your size in your classifications. It multiplies your premium: a 1.10 EMR means roughly 10% more premium; a 0.90 EMR, roughly 10% less.
An EMR may also be one requirement in a project owner’s, general contractor’s, or prequalification service’s process. That third party sets any threshold and other requirements and determines eligibility; there is no universal bid threshold. The EMR recalculates every year on a rolling three-year window of claim and payroll data.
02My mod was fine last year. Why would it change?
Because it is rebuilt every year, not carried forward. Your mod is computed from a rolling three-year window of claim and payroll data, so each year one year drops off and a new one enters — and the filed rating values themselves (split points, expected loss rates, accident limitations) are refiled by your state on their own schedule.
That means a clean result expires by construction. The bureau recalculates roughly 90 days before your renewal date, from whatever the data says then — which is why accuracy is something you keep, not something you get once.
03What does Premwise actually do?
Premwise explains how your EMR is built and, where personalized analysis is available, checks the arithmetic against your state’s filed rating values with your written authorization — identifying source-cited potential factual discrepancies. The software is self-serve: no Premwise human reviews your result before it reaches you.
Where something is worth acting on, Premwise prepares supporting analysis and documentation for you or your licensed broker to review and submit. Premwise never submits anything to a carrier, rating bureau, or third party, and final determinations are always made by them, not us.
04Which states do you cover?
Feature availability varies by state — both because analysis coverage is built state by state from public filings, and because state rules govern what services may be offered and how.
The public rating-value lookup and educational tools are available nationally. For anything customer-specific, we will tell you exactly what is available for your state before you start — never after.
05Can’t I just do this myself?
Genuinely, maybe — the rules are public, and our state rating-value lookup and formula walkthrough are free for exactly that reason.
What it takes in practice: the correct effective-dated values for your state and rating date (they change every year), a line-by-line reconciliation of the worksheet against your loss runs and payroll, and the correct correction path inside the state’s revision window. Most online “EMR calculators” use a shortcut formula, not the real one.
If you’d rather have it checked carefully with every number cited, that is what Premwise is for — where it’s available.
06How is my data handled?
Nothing is accessed until you give written authorization, and you may revoke future access at any time — revocation does not undo processing completed before it became effective and may prevent Premwise from completing the service.
Your records are isolated to your organization, enforced at the database layer rather than by application code. They are encrypted in transit and at rest, never sold, and never used to train generalized or shared machine-learning models.
Premwise may also use information from your records in aggregated or deidentified form — a form that cannot reasonably be used to identify your business or any individual — including in published research and benchmarks. What is published is aggregated statistics, never claim-level rows, and your business is never named without your written consent. The authorization you sign says this, and the Terms and Privacy Policy describe it in full.
Every result is produced by deterministic calculation — the same inputs give the same result every time — and goes through a documented review before it is released to you.
07Do you file corrections for me?
No — and that is deliberate. Premwise prepares analysis and documentation; you or your licensed broker decide whether to use and submit it. Nothing is ever sent by Premwise, nothing is prepared without your approval, and a submission is recorded only when you report it.
08I’m a broker — how does Premwise work with my clients?
As software you run, not a service that runs around you. The recompute runs in your environment; you review every item, adopt it in your own words, and author every output — nothing reaches your client except from you.
The economics match: a flat software fee, never a share of premium, commission, or findings. Where the channel is available for your states, we’ll tell you before anything starts — the full picture is at premwise.ai/for-brokers.
09What’s the calibration study?
A free, invitation-only research program in select states: Premwise runs its recomputation software against an experience-rating worksheet you already hold, to measure whether the printed mod reproduces from its own inputs. Participants get the full recomputation back, with every value cited to its source.
It’s research that validates the software — not a sales program, and there is no fee, now or later. Details are at premwise.ai/study.
